Day 2: New Orleans

We started the morning off by walking over one of the canals into the Lower Ninth Ward, where Katrina hit especially hard. We saw plenty of evidence of the storm, even after all these years. Perhaps the most striking of the things we saw were the symbols spray painted on doors and walls that communicated crucial information to search and rescue teams: which crew led the search, the date, number of bodies found, and any hazards in the building. See the close up photo of the door for a good example.

After that, we walked through the Bywater to the French Quarter and bought Mufaletta sandwiches to eat by the river. So delicious! We walked to downtown to catch a streetcar into the Garden District - a beautiful area with gorgeous old homes and a really nice little business district. We returned back to the Quarter for a dinner of fried crawfish, gumbo, and jambalaya... And after all that walking and tasty food, a good night's sleep sounds like a pretty good option.

Tomorrow we'll take a bus to Natchez, MS and the plan is to start walking the Natchez Trace on Saturday!
